Dostana Movie Review Dostana is Happy and Gay

20 Jul

Dostana is an extension of the ‘Kantaben plot’ of Kal Ho Na Ho. There is nothing really unique about Dostana (most scenes give you a scene of deja vu) but nevertheless Dostana is intermittently funny without being offensive.

Story of Dostana: Sam (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal (John Abraham) are looking for an apartment and since the owner (Sushmita Mukherjee) hates giving the apartment to guys lest they could corrupt her niece Neha (Priyanka Chopra), the two pretend to be gays. Neha, Sam and Kunal become friends and the guys begin to fall madly in love with Neha. But Neha has already fallen for Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol), the boss of her company. Whether the two guys choose love or friendship is the crux of the story.

Plus points of Dostana:

Full credit to Karan Johar to have produced up a taboo topic and a round of applause to Tarun Mansukhani for directing Dostana as his debut film. Though one cannot say the same about the script writer who has just given the same old story with a gay finishing, Tarun has directed the film well. We can take our hats off to Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham to be sporting enough; not caring a fig about their image, and doing complete justice to their roles. And yes, Miami is HOT!

Minus points of Dostana:

1. Most scenes are not funny, just cliche. In how many movies, have you not seen actors, by mistakenly, doing something suggestive while the third person walks in and thinks there is something cooking between the two? You have seen it in Kal Ho Na Ho, Masti, Golmaal Returns, Hello etc. C’mon guys, it is TWO MUCH and it ain’t funny.

2. Dostana is a movie about friendship but the ‘friendship’ aspect is not shown with the right amount of sensitivity. In the first half, it is all about their gay antics and their misinterpretation, and the second part is about both guys trying to woo Priyanka Chopra. The friendship factor is lost somewhere in Dostana.

3. Songs most of them jarring and off key (one of the worst scores of Vishal Shekhar) pop up at odd times and slow the pace of the film. Except for Desi Girl and Jaane Kyun, you cannot really remember any of the other songs.

4. Some scenes like the auction scene and scenes involving Boman Irani were not required and lengthened the movie unnecessarily.

Best scenes of Dostana:

1. Abhishek Bachchan explaining about how John Abraham and he had met, and dated. The flashback funny scene is rip roaring and Abhishek Bachchan’s performance makes it a visual treat.

2. A cute romantic scene was when John Abraham treats Priyanka Chopra for the Kuch Kuch Hota Hain movie. He recreates the magical scene of Shahrukh Khan mesmerizing Kajol in the movie and makes it look like likable. Full marks to Tarun Mansukhani for shooting the scene very well.

3. The scene where Bobby Deol tells Priyanka Chopra they don’t have a life together in the baseball arena is filmy but moving. The onlookers including John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan think that Priyanka has actually said ‘yes’ to Bobby.

4. The final kiss scene between Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham is the landmark scene, easily going to be one of the talked about scenes in Bollywood. Which is the first mainstream Bollywood movie to have a gay kiss scene? Answer: Dostana.

Performances in Dostana:

Abhishek Bachchan has given a splendid performance. It is really top notch and though it looked like he had lost his marbles in Drona, he does a good job in Dostana. He is a sheer delight. John Abraham set the heart of women racing as he flexed his finely carved muscles with wild abandon. John Abraham is not just ‘Brawn Abraham'; he has performed brilliantly too. Priyanka Chopra has never looked so shapely. Her oomph appeal reaches zenith in Dostana.

Do You Really Need To Come In First Place

8 Nov

When I was in 6th grade, track and field was all the rage. I’ve never been particularly athletic. But it was 1984 and everyone in my class was pretty fascinated with the Olympics that year. As you can imagine the school’s annual track meet turned into a mini-Olympics.

So I surveyed the events and the sign-ups for each one. I decided that the long-distance running events held the most promise for glory. The 2 mile, in particular, only had 2 other girls signed up-so I was pretty much guaranteed a “medal”. That sounded pretty exciting. Maybe I could go for the gold!

However, watching the other events leading up to the 2-mile, I soon learned that one of the other girls was a seasoned runner. She knew all about pacing, how many minutes she should be able to run a mile in, and all that fancy stuff. At that point, I knew that first place was pretty much done for. I barely knew how many laps around the track I had to run. I ran the race anyway and wound up coming in second-which was just fine by me.

It’s not all about winning-a place or a show can be just fine

Whenever I talk to a client about search engine placement, this track meet comes into mind. The client comes to me wanting to be #1 for their chosen search term. But for many small businesses, being ranked first is not truly that important-and depending on the search term, being #1 may hurt their business.

How can being #1 possibly hurt?

I know, saying that being on top can hurt your business sounds pretty unbelievable. But, being in first place has several disadvantages:

1. Getting to first place for desirable keywords takes a lot of work. The world of search engine placement is highly competitive. Most people with a website are trying to get placed in the Search Engines.

With all of this competition, you’ll have to do a lot of work on your site to get the search engines’ attention. This could include keyword research, changing your headlines, editing your text, submitting your site, getting links coming in to your site, and making sure that your site is content-rich. It takes a fair bit of work just to get listed, and then even more work to get to the top. Aiming for third or fourth place can be easier to achieve, and cuts down the amount of work required to get there.

2. The climb to the top is often slow. Raising your ranking on the search engines isn’t an instantaneous process. After you’ve made your changes, you have to wait for the search engines to stop by and re-rank you.

You probably won’t get to the top spot on the first try-so you’ll have to go through this process a few times to make headway. The quest to get to the top can take quite a while, and having to work repeatedly on optimizing your site for search engines can take your focus and attention away from your business.

3. Being #1 can bring you more “browsers” instead of qualified prospects. Holding the top spot means that you’re most likely to be a visitor’s first stop on their search. Instead of having a focused idea of what they’re looking for, the people who are coming to your site may only have a vague idea-which means more hand-holding and question-answering for you.

This can become a real problem if you work to be ranked first for a more general search term like “marketing consultant”. You’ll have lots of visitors, sure, but are they really the best visitors for you?

The sheer number of visitors is much less important than the quality of visitors that arrive at your site. Are they looking for what you’re selling? Do they have the right sort of budget to work with you? Are they in an industry that you like working with? Are they going to connect with your personality?

If you get them to your site, but they then answer “no” to any of the above questions, they won’t buy from you-which can be more frustrating than having them never come by at all.

4. Sometimes the top spot gets skipped! Some searchers automatically click lower in the list instead of clicking on #1. This may be because they assume that the person in the #1 spot would be too busy to help them, or would have higher rates. Or they may just skip over the top slot visually because it’s close to paid ads at the top of the page.

Being a few listings down actually reduces this skip-over factor, and makes it more likely that a rushed visitor will notice your listing.

5. People often aren’t ready to buy the first thing they see. Your customers will want to do their due diligence research before making a purchase. If you’re number one on the search results list and they start researching from the top, you may find that by listing 4 or 5 they feel informed enough to purchase. And you will have been long forgotten just because they clicked on it first.

If a visitor comes to your site after having seen other options, they may be more prepared to make a purchase immediately. This could help you close more sales.

6. Staying on top is challenging. Imagine a pyramid of cheerleaders competing for the “longest time in a human pyramid” World Record. They’re up there, trying to keep the girl on top stable for hours at a time. Sounds exhausting, right?

It’s equally tiring to try to stay in the top spot on the search engine rankings. Because, while you’re sitting smugly on top, other companies are working on their sites, trying to climb over you. Unless you keep checking and keep working at it, that #1 slot may not be yours for long. This vicious circle takes your attention away from your business as you have to work on your website endlessly.

Does that mean that if you do reach #1 you should take steps to lower your ranking?

If you’re already in the top spot for a search term, don’t panic-you’ve already conquered #1 and 2 on this list by being patient and working through the process.

But if you find that you’re suffering from any of the other problems on the list-too many browsers, not enough visitors because you’re being skipped, or lots of visitors and not enough purchasers, you may consider experimenting with letting other companies take over the top spot for a while to see if your site will benefit.

Being in first place isn’t everything in the search engine race. But if you can get into the top 10 results, you’ll improve your traffic, get more interested prospects to your site, and probably close more sales. And there should be a medal for that!

Racism is a Self-induced Disease

3 Nov

I had a hard time last week, explaining a European guy that I hailed from a country which consisted of 28 states and more than 25 spoken languages and thousands of other languages. Nevertheless, it wasn’t much surprising for me to believe on his imbecilic remarks just for the reason that he was never outside his own country. Subsequently, another thought haunted my mind – Are we Indians so ignorant about the people from the prosperous countries? I am sure that all my attempts to find such a person, at least among the well-educated sections from the Indian society would turn futile.

It is not uncommon in India for people to gather useless stares at a tourist or a foreigner (firang* – that’s what they refer as in Mumbai) who is on a brief visit to the country. Well, it is not about the stares and glares I am talking about, but I am unable to understand the reason why we are attracted so much towards the white skin. The Englishmen ruled us for years for the very reason and the prejudices that they were taken to be superior, more presentable and thus possessed the power to influence. Why is any thing that is darker than white, rather being wheat-ish or black is considered substandard? I was born to a mother whose skin color was fairer than that of my father. Later, I was being told by a family member that my Grandma prayed for my bright skin color. This trend is common in Indian societies and is omnipresent since generations. It is not that these thoughts of orthodoxies existed only during the reign of our Great grannies and Great grand fathers. It is disheartening that the inclination towards the whiter color is much appreciated than the human nature, his work, talent and merits even today.

One of the most affected sections of this self-induced racism is the fairer sex. A member among the fairer sex has no good future in the glamor-world if she is not born fair. An average looking girl does not stand a good chance of getting married to the man of her dreams just for the very reason that his family members do not prefer her to be a good match. In an arranged marriage, they would always ask for her younger daughter who is rather fairer. Isn’t it disgusting? Unfortunately, this is common among our societies. We have been overlooking these aspects for generations, so much so that they have become a part of our culture, taboos and more significantly, our attitudes. I have been seeing several advertisements being flaunted on the Indian television screens which claim their cosmetic product, a fairness cream or soap guaranteeing a brighter skin color – the product that has a potential to open new doors of success and enlightenment into their sad and non happening state of lives. Some cosmetic companies have not even spared men for their crime of being the darker sex. A typical such advertisement shows a dark colored, oily skinned teenage man sitting gloomy, disheartened for his skin color, unable to attract attention of the girl he likes in his college. Typically, he finishes the two week exercise of the skin cream recommended by the Company and here he goes winning not only the girl of his dreams but also a huge feminine fan club. The question to be raised here is that are such advertisements specially designed for the Indian market? The answer to which lies in the very fact that such advertisements are openly flaunted and anticipated by the various segments of people in the Indian market. This is obvious due to a basic reason that, we have taken dark skin as granted to be an emblem of inefficiency and incapability.

Caste-ism is the worst form of Racism. Believe me, even today it is not easy to be a student belonging to a so categorized scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward class background. I still remember the attempts of my School Principal in class ten, to reduce my internal practical marks in the final examination papers lest I may score more than her son who studied in the same class. I am thankful to my class teacher who stopped this crime from being committed, who stood beside me and later communicated us this loathsome act. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do. It is not easy to prove the injustices you suffer due to your origin, social or family backgrounds esp. when most of such acts are not done openly. In a society where a person’s last name is asked in order to identify his caste, creed and the profession of his forefathers, it is difficult to grow up and rise esp. when you have not much in your hand. For years, great social reformers have been sacrificing their lives to abolish these unfair practices of such caste-linked biases. Even a majority of Dalit population is downtrodden, devoid of basic education. Females are harassed, raped and brutally murdered in Indian remote villages for the reason of being born Dalit. A nation will never grow due to a handful prosperous men that make a mark, rather you must grow in harmony – it’s only when your people grow, your country grows. Reservations, although are helpful to provide opportunities that have been deprived off by the society from this population, it is not the only solution to put an end to these practices. If Racism is the thirty thousand feet view of the Indian society, Caste-ism is the ground view. It’s all in our minds.

There was this superb story floating around through e-mails which referred the downtrodden people among the Indian society as ‘grasshoppers’. The fortunate and well qualified people referred to as ‘the ants’ got fed up one day due to the nuisance caused by these grasshoppers. They were worn out due to the internal politics within the country and due to the opportunities they were missing due to the burdens caused to them due to these grasshoppers. The hardworking ants suddenly became self-centered spiders and gradually decided to build their webs in the United States. The story finally ended up with all the ants landing up in the States and there they started to live happily ever after. In India, millions of grasshoppers are still toiling hard for their living. Well, have nothing to blame for the ants here because they are hard working, sincere, desirous of a society with equal rights and opportunities and laws fair enough for the benefit of all. I feel that these ants are myopic and lack the vision to grab a view of a bigger picture. They are myopic to the fact that these so called grasshoppers are real victims to the greed exhibited by them. These ants have been stocking the food of knowledge and power into their homes keeping the rest of the needy ones deprived of it. Now, let’s stop talking in the language of the ants and the grasshoppers – the story never covered the bigger picture of the whole situation. It’s all about us, the people. We fail to realize the tougher situations being faced by the less fortunate people. We never exhibit openness of thoughts towards the socially backward people. A majority of the suppressed families don’t even know how to avail the benefits of reservation. Today, a highly qualified business graduate thinks of developing his roots abroad, righteously neglecting his moral duties, giving almost nothing back to his country. This negligence is another form of racism and is the real picture of Indian society today.

We being humans, favoritism will never cease to exist in our minds, but it is rather more important to assess ourselves on the terms of the way we think about others. Being fair-looking or being born to prosperous parents does not provide us the ethical right to build a narrow outlook towards others. Just give it a second thought when next time you disparagingly refer an Indian a ‘Desi’. This is the time to review ourselves before terming the world a ‘Racist’.

How I Met the Indian Girl of My Dreams

13 Jun

It was Saturday night and a few of my friends from college were going out to the movies, but I had decided to stay home. I told everyone I had a term paper to finish but the real truth was that I didn’t want to go out at all. Everyone in the group had a date and I wasn’t with anyone at that time. I had recently had a few bad experiences with my last 3 relationships and it seemed harder and harder to find someone who was compatible with me. Although I was born and raised in the U.S., I had a strong Indian heritage. My parents had migrated from India almost 26 years ago looking for a better life for all of us. Since there weren’t too many Indian girls at my college, it wasn’t easy for me to find exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a long term serious relationship, someone to get married to and hopefully have children with one day. But as each day passed by I began to think that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. I decided to go home on Sunday since there was going to be a family get-together at the house. I was looking forward to one of my mother’s home cooked meals.

Once I got there I was surprised to see how many people were visiting. I walked around and shook hands with all those I knew and then headed to the kitchen. My mother quickly smiled when she saw me and said, “Ashok, so glad you’re here, I made your favorite; chicken curry with vegetable rice for you” as she pointed to the stove. While my mother was talking, I was looking at this gorgeous girl talking to my sisters. She had long black hair and her skin was honey colored brown. Her eyes were dark brown with a touch of green. My mother noticed I was staring, so she turned to grab the girl and said, “Anushka, I want you to meet my oldest son Ashok” and she led her towards me. I extended my hand and before I could think of anything to say, my mother interrupted, “Anushka is Derek’s wife; your brother’s friend. Isn’t she beautiful Ashok?” I said the only thing I could say which was “yes” and I blushed a bit. Then my mother added, “When are you and your brother Niraj going to settle down and marry a nice Indian girl like Anushka, tell me?” I gently hugged my mom and said, “One of these days mom, who knows” as I walked towards the yard to search for my brother. I grabbed a beer from the fridge and walked to where my brother Niraj was standing. “Hey bro” I said as I gave him a five. Niraj looked at me and leaned forward as he whispered, “Did you see my friend Derek’s wife?” as he glanced with his eyes towards the kitchen. I quickly responded, “I just met her. Mom introduced us” Niraj then told me, “You will never believe how they met bro” as he took a sip of his beer.

I responded, “Let me guess, he went to India, right?” Niraj laughed and said, “No Ash, he met her on some online dating site for indian dating something like that. Can you believe that?”

The truth was, I could not. I caught up with Derek and asked him for more info about the website. I searched for “dating Indian women.” Within minutes, I knew how I’d be able to meet the kind of women I was looking for. I used the methods described to meet beautiful, young, professional and intelligent Indian women who were members of Shaddi.com. These women were just like me in wanting to find that special someone. The most surprising thing was that some of them even lived near me. To tell you the truth it’s hard to believe that all this happened to me only three years ago. Today, as I sit here at one of the family gatherings I am once again amazed at the beautiful woman across the room talking to my sisters. Her name is Sheila and she is my wife. I wonder what my life would be like if I had never visited that site? Where would I be? More than likely I would still be alone, looking and wondering where the woman of my dreams was. I met Nina a few months after following my friends advice and a several months later we became serious. A year ago I asked her to marry me and here we are today. We have now been married for 7 months and I could not be happier.

I’m a first generation East Indian American clinical psychology doctoral student. One of the greatest joys in my life is my romantic relationship with my fiancée, Sheila. During the time I was in the Indian dating scene looking for the right partner, I was shy and wasn’t that good at getting the right girl’s attention especially in the desi dating world. It took me some years but was able to meet and date the right single Indian woman; So now four happy years later, Sheila and I decided to help others who want to date and have a long term relationship with an Indian woman.
